August 1 - 14th
August 3rd
The Le Tour birds exercised well 3 mornings since the last race and without incident.
The New Glasgow race had to be moved up to Wednesday due to the following forecast at the release point.
August 7th
The birds were given a bath on Friday. They were exercised for the first time on Saturday. It was overcast with a very light rain. All but one bird flew for a good 20 minutes and about 40 flew for 45 minutes. It seems it doesn't matter how many birds that I have there is always a group of 40 birds that fly considerably longer that the rest. One late bird arrived today.
Aug 8th
All but 8 birds flew for 45 minutes this morning. When I called them down they trapped very quickly. One late bird arrived this morning.
Aug 11th
The birds exercised well on Monday and Tuesday. This morning they required little encouragement to fly. Even the infrequent flyers disappeared for 15 minutes with the main group. At the 45 minute mark about half the birds began to land. About 15 minutes later the rest were going to land when a pesky sparrow hawk flew over the loft scaring off the birds. They flew for another 20 minutes, landed and trapped without incident.
I am thinking of having the Antigonish (350 km) race Friday. The present prediction on the Weather Network is for a 40% chance of showers throughout the course with an average of a 20 km/h tail wind from the SE. The next best day would be Sunday and the prediction is for a 30% chance of showers throughout the course but a headwind from 10 to 15 km/h. The Weather Network is the only source that gives a prediction for early next week which is for variable cloudiness. However that's a long way off to have any degree of certainty.
Environment Canada is vaguely predicting mostly sunny throughout the course on Friday and only showers in Northern NB. But for Sunday mostly showers throughout the course.
The CTV Maritimes news channel is predicting mostly sunny throughout Nova Scotia on Friday but predicting more chance of showers throughout NB and for Sunday more chance of showers throughout the course than the Weather Network.
What would you do? Considering that the usual daily prediction throughout the Maritimes is for a 30 to 40% chance of showers and there is a Florida hurricane that is moving up the Atlantic coast and predicted to effect our weather this weekend. The birds had their best exercise period of the week this morning, their throats are pink, feathers are tight and clean, no scales on their chest muscles and beginning to get rosy pink, their feet are clean and they probably need some stress about now to slow down their wing molt. But remember a Friday release would be a tail wind day and that would be a new experience for the birds.
Aug 12th
Due to a worsening forecast and too much instability in the weather the Antigonish race is postponed until later this weekend. I checked the forecast at 6:00 this morning and it has worsen considerably since yesterday from western Nova Scotia and throughout New Brunswick. The POP prediction for NB is 60% with heavy rains for the northern part of the province. If it worsens any more by tomorrow morning it could be a disaster.
Aug 13th
The next race from Antigonish is scheduled for tomorrow Saturday Aug 7th.
